Event overview:
Managing Ourselves 2012 is a one-week sleep-away summer camp and conference where teens ages 16-17 develop and enhance real-world, hands-on leadership and teamwork skills while learning to start and run businesses and social ventures. The conference will be held July 15 – 21, 2012 in Nashville, TN at Scarritt-Bennett Center. The Managing Ourselves curriculum is based on Dr. John Miller’s 30 years of experiential management courses, including Bucknell University’s hugely popular Management 101.

Media coverage:
Dr. Miller was the genius behind one of [Bucknell's] most popular courses
“For 30 years, Dr. Miller was the genius behind one of [Bucknell's] most popular courses, Management 101. The class gave students real-time experience creating and running a business. Now …[he] wants to teach high school students to be more entrepreneurial in how they think about and perform on the job. ”
— Fast Company Expert Blogger and CEO, Cali Williams Yost (original post)
Will give students real experiences that can help guide their career choices
Joel Widmer, an entrepreneur and owner of Fluxe Digital Marketing who interviewed co-founder and Conference Director David Ledgerwood (watch the video), said: “I really like that [this conference] will give students real experiences that can help guide their career choices, and that they’ll have a chance to feel what it’s like to do something rather than just read about it. It could really unlock their potential a lot earlier…as opposed an internship halfway through college!”

Acceptance rates to top universities are at an all time low and the competition for students to get into their college of choice is heavy (http://www.bradshawcollegeconsulting.com/college_acceptance_rate.html). Students now must not only be able to demonstrate solid academics to admissions counselors but must also demonstrate their leadership skills. Along with conducting themselves in a professional manor, teens are expected to present themselves positively in a variety of new mediums including videos and social media. Colleges including Tufts University and University of Chicago have begun accepting YouTube videos along with a student’s application. (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/23/education/23tufts.html?_r=1&hp)Managing Ourselves is a one-week summer camp held July 15-21, 2012 for teens ages 16-17 years of age seeking to improve their leadership skills and their chances of success not only for upcoming college admission requirements but also in their chosen careers. Students learn directly from management expert John Miller, Ph.D., formerly at Bucknell and Yale, and youth leadership development expert, David Ledgerwood. They will learn about using social media safely and effectively, collaborating in the cloud, professional networking skills, and writing, speaking and presenting for impact. It’s all about learning by doing in a safe, productive and encouraging environment.
Scott, a Managing Ourselves 2011 graduate stated:
“I loved my Managing Ourselves experience. I’d attend again, but I can’t because I got a summer internship with a food distribution company [in London]. When I interviewed the recruiter loved the idea of Managing Ourselves; he asked me a lot of questions about it and I think, ultimately, it helped me get the spot. I also wrote about Managing Ourselves for one of my common app college essays. ”
Christyanna Arnold, parent of a teen who attending Managing Ourselves 2011, wrote on Twitter:
“b4 MO our teen had no idea the how to turn an idea into reality. Now he can count the cost b4 building towrs”
